Nikhil BHAGAT

Nikhil BHAGAT is the Global International Computer Hacking and Intellectual Property (ICHIP) Attorney-Advisor for the Dark Web and Cryptocurrency at the United States Department of Justice. In that role, he provides training, technical assistance, and case-based mentoring, to investigators, regulators, and prosecutors around the world.

He is a career public prosecutor, most recently serving as an Assistant United States Attorney for the Northern District of California in San Francisco. In that role, he served as the District’s inaugural dark web subject-matter expert. He was previously an Assistant United States Attorney for the Western District of Texas and was selected to join the United States Department of Justice through the Attorney General’s Honors Program.

Throughout his career, he has led investigations and public prosecutions of many different types of crimes, including matters involving international narcotics trafficking, human smuggling, firearms sales, transnational arms smuggling, fraud, and child exploitation. He also has extensive experience with investigations involving the dark web, cryptocurrency, and digital evidence.

Since 2016, Mr. Bhagat has regularly participated in training computer forensic examiners for the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Mr. Bhagat holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California, Berkeley and received a Juris Doctor degree from Columbia Law School in New York, where he served as an editor of the Columbia Law Review.
